Older Than Words

Why a sound can move anyone, anywhere — and why the same mathematics can become music that comforts, or music that frightens.

Music is older than words, and almost everyone understands it. It works the same way from one country to the next because it was never really invented — it uses feelings we are all born with.

We are drawn to sounds that feel settled and finished, and we pull away from sounds that are harsh and scratchy. These reactions are much the same everywhere in the world. That is why a piece of music can make almost anyone feel calm, or nervous, without a single word. And when music seems to carry a meaning, remember there is always a person who made it — the composer — choosing which of those built-in feelings to reach for. It is how the very same mathematics can be turned into something soothing, or something frightening.

Everyone already understands it

Music is found in every human culture we have studied — and birds and whales sing too. In one worldwide study, people could listen to a song from a culture they had never met and still tell whether it was a lullaby, a dance, or a song to soothe someone — just from the sound. Something in it reaches people no matter their language or background.

Two reactions we are born with

The first is a dislike of harshness. A rough, clashing sound (musicians call this dissonance) is not just a matter of taste — it is a real, physical clash your ear can pick out, and it goes straight to the part of the brain that senses alarm. It is the same effect a suspense film reaches for.

The second is a need for endings. A tune can feel unfinished, leaving you waiting for the note that makes it feel complete — as if the music has finally arrived home. That sense of arrival, when the tension lets go, is what musicians mean by resolution. It happens because your mind keeps quietly guessing what should come next, and it wants to be proved right.

The mathematics underneath

Long ago, Pythagoras noticed that a plucked string sounds pleasant when its lengths follow simple number patterns. Kepler found similar patterns in the way the planets are spaced. A physicist later marvelled that mathematics is unreasonably good at describing the world. The network took that idea and turned it into sound — fireflies blinking into one shared rhythm, a slime mold retracing a rail map, the hidden shape of a drum you can hear but never see.

The catch

An honest ending

But music does not simply show us the world as it is — the person who makes it always stands between the thing and your ear. Take a set of numbers and build harsh, unfinished-sounding music from them, and it will make you uneasy. Build cheerful dance music from the very same numbers, and it feels harmless.

And the reactions are not exactly the same for everyone. Some of it is learned, and a few researchers even think music is a happy accident rather than something we ever needed. The main idea holds anyway: these feelings are old and shared by almost everyone, and making music is the art of playing on them.
